Room 528, Wednesday Afternoon/Evening

Wednesdays were Emma's slow day. No classes, no homework, and she typically did all her Special Classes on Thursday before going to film studies.

She'd already talked to Jack and was bored again. So since Triela would be out part of the afternoon at Gun Club, she had the door open and her music up, and was reading a completely trashy magazine.

What? She knew what her roommate had been up to last night when she'd been out. Any teasing from certain other parties would result in teasing and potential blackmail. Unfortunately for Triela, telepaths either made the best or worst roommates ever, depending on their mood.

"Because he's got Sebastian," Karla guessed. Well, it wasn't really a guess. "Because he's there and you're here and neither of you are going to unbend enough to ask for the other?"

"I don't want to talk about this," Emma whined sulked whined from her pillow. "Drop it, Karla, and I won't say anything about what you said."

Karla smiled a bit. "My self-preservation thinks this is a great idea, even if if I'd rather keep asking you about it. I like you and Jack together. You make me happy."

"What is there to ask?" Emma retorted, an edge of anger in her voice. "Is talking about it going provide any enlightenment on the topic? Which is so not a topic."

[glacial_queen]

"It might," Karla answered, because Emma had asked and Fandom was demanding truth. "Because if I can figure out why you guys can't be happy together, maybe there's something I can do to help." Hopefully the excited flailing Karla was doing was enough to inform Emma she was still speaking not of her own volition. "Because I only want you happy, Emma. Which is why I'm going to stop talking about this, just as soon as this stupid island lets me!" she ground out through clenched teeth.

"Where would you like to start? The overprotective streak, rampaging trust issues with humanity in-general, deep-rooted need to overachieve for self-validation, Sebastien, or 'other?'" she snapped.

...she wasn't sure which one of them those applied to. Both, most likely.

"...Great! We can stop talking about this, and instead talk about this crush of yours on me!" Meeeeeeeeeeeeeean, Emma.

"That is not giving me any reason to drop this conversation," Karla grumbled. "Quite the opposite, in fact."

"Yes, but it's a conversation that would make me happier," Emma pointed out. "Do you have a third topic to suggest?"

"If the main reason it'll make you happy is because you'll get to tease me, then I'll come up with one," Karla decided. "I still owe you a thank you for getting everyone to Kaeleer. Or an apology. Or both."

"Can you blame me? You are adorable when you blush, and teasing you is fun. I don't mean it mean-spiritedly," Emma replied. "But, really, I want to talk about anything that is not the mess that is me and Jack. I'll accept a 'thank you,' and a promise that you won't lie to me like that again. I don't appreciate it."

"When did I lie to you?" Karla asked, bewildered. "I gave you all the information I had when I left the message! I was deceitful when I let everyone in Kaeleer think I took the portal back, that's true, but I never lied to you!"

"You could have sent a message!" she retorted. "A letter. A messenger pigeon. Something. But when Morton told me you'd left days ago, all I could think was that Hobart had snatched you from right under their noses."

"You didn't lie outright, but you implied a promise, that you'd be right back as soon as possible."

"I couldn't have sent a message!" Karla retorted. "Not while I was sneaking out. If I'd sent a message, they would have known what I was doing! Damn it, Emma! What was I supposed to do? Just...come home?! Leave Jaenelle and Lucivar like that? I would have followed you in that situation, too!"

"Are you seriously telling me, that with all your magic, you could not find a way to send a letter once you were underway? Or that you couldn't have convinced one of your kindred friends to take something through a portal? Come on, Karla, you are smarter than this," Emma said, frustrated.

"No, Emma!" Karla snapped. "There was no one. Nothing. We were out in the wilderness where there were no people. That was the whole point--Lucivar took Jaenelle far, far away from civilization, far away from anyone she could hurt. Until we went into Agio, we hadn't seen anyone for days, just the three of us and Smoke. No one. And, sorry, they'd stopped delivering the post in Agio several hours before we showed up. Something about thousands of Jhinka and slaughtering innocents."
