A Hotel Room in Nowhere, Rhode Island. Late Tuesday Night Fandom Time.

Emma couldn't face the idea of staying another moment in Massachusetts, and they couldn't get a portal back to the island until morning.

Besides, Rhode Island was probably the last place anyone would think to look for them, and therefore safest. The hotel was also almost completely empty, so the manager was willing to cut them a deal to get two rooms for the night.

Emma just wanted a hot shower and a bed. And for someone to explain to her why she'd waken up on the lawn of the Clinic.

"I don't sulk!" Karla protested.

Sulkily.

"So, how're you doing?" See? Karla was being perfectly sociable!

"Like I got hit by a steamroller," she replied wryly. "Everything is still wobbly and my head feels like cotton."

"I really am sorry about that," Karla offered, leaning over to rub Emma's shoulders. "I didn't have time to be gentle."

"What did you do, anyway?" Emma asked. "I don't think I've ever felt that sick in my entire life."

"I emptied out all the drugs in your system," Karla said. "However many days' worth it all was, I just kind of...burned them all. It was the best thing I could think to do, since I figured some of what was wrong was their fault."

There had been other ways to do the same thing, but Karla had felt they were running low on time and options.

Emma made a face. "I don't remember anything except some needles and lots of pills," she said. "Do I even want to know how much they'd given me?"

Karla wrinkled her nose. "No. No, you really don't. I don't know what most of it all was, but...it seemed really excessive, even so. I had to get all that gunk out of you to finish what the others started. They brought you back to yourself, and I ditched the crap that was making it hard for you to stay in control."
