Room 528, Saturday Afternoon

Emma had gone and found a copy of the movie in question, and also handwavily checked out a copy of the script from the library, just for reference. After all, they might want to compare the two, if they ended up mocking the movie's shortcomings.

For now, however, she was sprawled out on the bed with her laptop, checking out the extra features on the movie. Technology here? Awesome. These were so much cooler than VHS tapes.

[OOC: Up early for SP goodness with a Difficult Boy, but open before him, sure. ETA: They made it through the movie before getting NWS, but it's getting dirty...]

"Nothing too bad," Jack said. "We had to talk our way into a tea party and make polite conversation. I liked most of the people there." A pause. "Do you know who Vin Diesel is?"

"Movies actor, I think," she replied, giving him a quizzical look. "You were discussing action films over tea time?"

"Action films, celebrity gossip, the weather, and competitive horse riding," Jack answered. "Though in practice, it was mostly us complaining about how we hated talking about what we were supposed to talk about."

He made a face. "I was supposed to talk about interesting illnesses."

"Did you pick the general malaise of society?" she laughed. "Or would that have been cheating?"

"I'm now disappointed in myself that I didn't think of that," Jack told her.

[icecoldfrost]

"You would have thought of it eventually, once you got bored and started getting peckish," Emma replied, offering the bag of microwave popcorn she'd made while waiting for him. Which was already half-empty. Whoops. "But then Mitchell might have given you a second detention for being contrary."

Jack took a few kernels of popcorn out of the bag. "I wonder if they can do that," he said thoughtfully. "Just keep adding detention after detention until I've given my life away."

He hoped not. It would mean he couldn't visit Sebastien and that would make him cross.

"They probably could. I mean, who's going to intercede on our behalves? Another teacher?" she asked, rolling her eyes. "Even the students who actually have concerned and loving parents aren't protected, because their protectors aren't here. We're pretty much at the mercy of the system."

"Although I really doubt Mitchell is the type to abuse the power in horrible ways. Now, if you'd had detention with Deadpool..."

"He isn't," Jack said. "I rather like him. I just skipped his class this term because it messes with my head to learn history that far forward."

"Deadpool," he agreed, "is entirely a different story."

"So you'll watch our movies, just not the history," Emma teased lightly. "I see how it is; you want the shiny bits. Which is fine, as I prefer your brain unbroken."

"It makes sense," Jack protested, but lightly, because he wasn't sure it altogether did. "Anyhow, this movie is based on a play hundreds of years old, so not much risk of breaking my brain, is there?"

Emma just pressed her lips together and smirked at him, amused. "I have much more entertaining ways of breaking your brain," she informed him. "But we can start with the movie."

"I know you do," he returned, barely edging her with an elbow. "And we can start with the movie."

She just beamed at him angelically and tossed him the DVD case to browse while she cued up the film.

"Apparently they 'updated' this one, to make it more accessible," she warned him. "So, rather than Shakespearean clothing, we've got a costumer's interpretation of the late nineteenth century."

"Good, I can point out what they got wrong," Jack said dryly, as he perused the case. "For one, everyone at home would think their Helena had consumption. Has she ever eaten, do you think?"

"Look at her cheekbones. She clearly grew up eating decently, but I don't think she's seen a sandwich in years," Emma bitched cattily.

"It's too bad," Jack said. "She'd be pretty, if someone made her eat. But I suppose it's the fashion."

[icecoldfrost]

"You'll have to tell me if the rest of them are properly in fashion or not." The opening credits started up, and Emma set the laptop so they could both see. "When we aren't mocking our wasting heroine, of course."

"Ill do my best," Jack said.

Watching the movie, of course, required sitting closer to her as the familiar opening played out. "Well, it looks pretty, at least."

Well of course it required that they sit closer together; there was only so much space on Emma's bed, and her laptop was only so big. They both needed to be able to see.

"I like pretty things," she replied, watching the screen. "Although you shouldn't think that's all it will take to get me to audition. I can play dress-up on my own time."

"I know," he said. "Just -- listen to the language See if you can imagine yourself speaking it."

"Mmm." Emma settled beside him, paying close attention to the goings-on onscreen. Occasionally her lips would try and move silently over the more unfamiliar words, but for the most part she was paying diligent attention.

"A nun or marrying the jerk? That's rather harsh."

"At least he's not making the other option starving in the street," Jack shrugged. "Now watch. The fairies are coming soon."

There were fairies, and lovers in the woods, and everything that could go horribly wry somehow managed to do so.

By the time they reached the rendition of the play-within-a-play, Emma had leaned her head on his shoulder as she watched, and was pretty sure she'd understood everything that was going on. Except this. "Why are they even doing this?" she asked. "I would think they would have ended the play earlier, with everyone happily paired off."

"Honestly, I think it's just that it's funny," Jack answered. "That's most of why I like it, anyhow. And it gave the clowns in the company something to do." He reached out a hand to trace her cheekbones. "You like happy endings?"
