Laffy Taffy Cabin, Alcove A3

When it came down to it, Emma was bored. There was only so much sitting quietly and playing nicely that she was capable of the in the first place, and she'd used most of it up the first fourteen years of her life, trying to be perfect for Winston.

Which is how the germ of an idea started tickling inside her head, and why Emma was in her alcove, pecking away at her Blackberry and haphazardly shoving items in a bag. It was devious and sneaky, and might actually work. Now she just needed to work out the timezone difference to make sure she didn't arrive too early, and her evil plan would be complete.

"Are you still grumpy at me?" Karla called, leaning against the doorframe of the cabin. It wasn't hers to enter, after all. "Or can I come in?"

"I'm still grumpy, but can come in if you make yourself useful and promise not to make fussy-faces behind my back," Emma retorted, leaning back to stick her head out of the alcove and glare at Karla.

[glacial_queen]

"Fair enough," Karla said, heading down to her alcove. "I hadn't planned on making fussy-faces anyway. Why, what are you doing that I would make fussy-faces about?"

There was always something, if Emma was involved.

"I'm blowing off my studies and running away to join the circus."

[glacial_queen]

"Gonna be a fortune-teller?" Karla asked, grinning. "Use your powers to tell people who they're gonna marry? Oooh, should I ask you how my date on Friday's going to go?"

She was a little nervous and a little proud, admitting to Emma she had a date.

"I was thinking something a bit more active, like lion-taming or a high-wire act," Emma said, just to tweak Karla's nose. "Or jumping through flaming hoops."

"But I predict that you're date will be interesting enough for you to call me by Saturday if you don't want to wake up with frogs in your bed."

"Saturday, I'll be in Rome with Triela, but I'll make sure to call you before we leave," Karla promised. "I'm not entirely sure how you'd fill my bed with frogs, but I have no doubt you could."

"I see how this works. You called Jack to rat me out, so that there'd be someone to babysit me while you ran off to Rome." Emma was going to glare again, yes. "You ought to bring me back the present."

Karla rolled her eyes. "Yes, that was exactly my brilliant plan," she said, ignoring the glare. "Because my first thought when agreeing to go to Rome was 'Who can I get to play nursemaid to Emma?'"

She was just going to perch on the foot of Emma's bed without asking permission. So there. "I was going to bring you back something from Rome," she added. "But then I learned about this tradition of giving coal instead..."

"Coal is for horrid little girls who go telling stories to people who have no business hearing them," Emma retorted as she threw a shirt at Karla.

Karla caught it and began folding it, in case Emma needed it for her trip. "Perhaps other little girls should start listening to their Healer, so she doesn't have to run and tattle to someone they will listen to," she sniffed. "Also, big words from someone who likes to send Morton pictures."

Almost a full year later and Karla had finally found out about that.

"Maybe if my Healer could give me a reason why I shouldn't be sitting in class, I might listen," Emma snarked back. "I thought nice walks outside and sitting quietly were things I was allowed to do."

"And Morton has nothing to do with this, beyond the fact he is your dear cousin and your family, and implied that he would like to be kept up-to-date regarding your life in Fandom, so that he knows you're happy." Really, Karla. "Jack is not family. He's just a friend who's now in a fuss because you made him worry."

Also, Emma found it funny to send Morton pictures.

Karla wasn't about to point out that family deserved any consideration simply by virtue of being family, however true that was. "Jack may not be family, but he's a dear friend who also wants to be kept up to date," Karla declared. "He's got a vested interest in your well-being and happiness, too. So nyah."

And she was going to stick her tongue out, like the super-mature girl she was.

"He's just a friend, and does not have any 'vested interest' in me." He hadn't been able to promise anything, and some part of Emma was still sad about that, even if she didn't admit it to herself.

"And my Healer still hasn't told me what was so hazardous about going to class!"

"That doesn't mean he doesn't still care about you, deeply," Karla retorted. "And--future whatevers aside--after a year or so of being your friend and your lover, I'd say his interest is pretty damn vested, even if you'll never be more than friends! We all have a vested interest in the continued health and well-being of one Miss Emma Frost, because we care about her! Even if she is stubborn and prickly as a mule in a cactus tree."

Hello, kettle? This is pot. I'd like to talk to you about your hue...

"As for class, apart from the obvious that you should have been back in bed and resting, you can't tell me your shields weren't all shot to Hell and back."

"I'd been, resting, I was bored, and it's not like there's oodles of 'loud' people in our class." Besides Tweety, but that didn't count since the girl was technically a graduate TA. "Being in the cabins is more hazardous to my mental health than being up at the school."

"But if that's your excuse, you have no grounds to whine the next time I call Morton or that Uncle of yours. Or better yet, that darling Prince Lucivar."

Right about now, Emma would put up with the fussing of Karla's family if she got to watch Lucivar toss Karla into a fountain.

"Lucivar is neither my relative, my friend, nor my lover," Karla argued. "He doesn't get a call."

Not that that would stop Emma from contacting him, or him from responding. And dunking her in a fountain.

"Also, the more you call them, the more they're going to think they have a right to fuss over you, too," she threatened.

"He is your Uncle Saetan's son and your Sister's brother, and I'd like you to tell him to his face that he isn't family," Emma challenged.

[glacial_queen]

"He's not my family," Karla grumbled, totally not admitting that Emma had a point. "But it does just prove my point. Jack likes you much more than Lucivar likes me. They both get fussing rights."

[icecoldfrost]

"They're not going to fuss over me if I give them you," Emma pointed out. "I've got no problems with sacrificing you to the wolves, darling, if it means my own escape."

And Emma had no problems with lying and telling people that Karla was sad or lonely or had hit her head and was convinced she was her own good twin.

Emma was a VERY MEAN GIRL.

Also, had she known, Karla would resent the implication that she was the evil twin. Resent, not deny.

"I will use Craft to make sure you trip as you're running away," Karla muttered. "See if I don't."

"If I tell them you had a date with a boy, they'll be too busy giving you an inquisition to mind me tripping over my own feet," she teased. "So tell me about this date."

[glacial_queen]

Ooooh, low blow.

"You are the meanest mean Emma who was ever mean," Karla informed her, sulking. "And I shouldn't tell you anything, since you are so mean."

Of course Karla was going to tell her everything. She was too excited not to.

"So, tomorrow, Warren's going to take me to Taste of Thai," she said, trying not to smile too much. "He said it's because he owes me lots of fabulous lunches, but he said it was a date--several times. So, I'm pretty sure it's a real date."

"Well, if the gentleman says it's a date, and the lady doesn't object," Emma agreed, trailing off significantly and raising an eyebrow at Karla. "Do you like him?"

Karla's blush probably answered that question all too well. "He's very nice," she said quickly. "And handsome. And a good friend."

Wow, Karla. Could you make him sound any blander?
